Pranad Patil pranadpatil @yahoo.co.in Kanheri Caves and surrounding areas, Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Mumbai, Maharashtra 19.207 72.902 Small puddles formed because of the rains. 2009-07-08 13:20:00 4 No particular direction. All were seen flying over the water. Cloudy and heavy rains. Most of the dragonflies were seen just flying over the water bodies. One pain was observed laying eggs. None None The first sighting was of four dragonflies seen over a comparatively big puddle filled up with rain water. Next we saw a swarm of approximately 15 Wandering Gliders, flying over a patch of bare rock. After this we saw a pair laying eggs in a road-side puddle. The day was concluded with the sighting of a single Wandering Glider, seen flying over water collected because of the dam constructed over the river flowing out of the park. (Again no photographic evidence, this time because of the rains.) [DragonflyIndia Message#1667] Message
Pranad Patil pranadpatil @yahoo.co.in Peth village (near Karjat), Raigad, Maharashtra 18.996 73.508 A small road-side puddle, next to a rice field, just outside the village. The road was a kuchha road. 2009-07-05 13:20:00   None Cloudly, but no rains Single dragonfly hovering over the puddle. none (although we saw lots of Blue Darners, a Ditch Jewel, a few Black Marsh Trotters and a Ruddy Marsh Skimmer / Crimson Marsh Glider female around the place) Lots of birds (Magpie Robin, Pied Cuckoo, Common Hawk Cuckoo, Red-vented Bulbuls, etc.) seen or heard around the place, but none very close to where the dragonfly was spotted. When we returned back, around the 5.30pm, the puddle had dried up and the drogonfly was not seen again. I tried to take a few snaps, but the dragonfly to too fast for me. But the large swarms (More than 50 ) are found during monsoon and the next few months. Need to check my photo archives for exact dates. [DragonflyIndia message#1677] Message
Raghu Ananth raghu_krn@yahoo.com Begur, Bangalore 12.842 77.631 Dry paddy fields, open lands, above the roads 2009-00-00 10:20:00 14 Hovering low and in a small area Cloudy Hovering low and in a small area. Most of them are flying alone. None   Initially, I had a feeling Pantala\'s have not yet arrived in Bangalore for i could see none of them in the human habitations -open lands, empty sites, water bodies.. Thought let me drive some distance away from the city and give a try in open lands, lakes and hills. After half an hour drive, I could find the first one a lonely Pantala flying low above the paddy fields (near the Nice ring road). In the next one and half hours, I sighted 14 of them. And, it was quite strange that most of them were flying alone. I always Wonder what can be the reason? When will they transform into a swarm consisting of hundreds. Are these individuals part of a fresh new migratory batch or from the pre monsoon batch. Sighting pattern of the 14 individuals (1+1+2+1+1+1+1+1+1+3+1). Range: Between Begur and Bettadasana pura Co ordinates: Between 12.877074, 77.635832(Begur) and 12.842766, 77.631798(Bettadasanpura) Distance covered: 20kms to and fro. Time Between 10am to 12 noon. Notes: No Pantalas were found in Begur or Bettadasanapura lakes. No Pantalas observed in betadasanapura hill. No Pantalas observed near any of the peepal trees. (Its common to see them in large congregation near peepal trees where they find some flying insects to eat. May be have to wait for another couple of months).

Just flying around and feeding     It is essential to add data about their occurrence through out the year too. Hence I am writing data from my notes. They seemed to be feeding, I did not go again to check if they were still there next day.
